Sportsguards
Devices to protect the teeth during athletic activities are often called sportsguards. These are typically made of a rubber or acrylic material and work best when custom made or custom fit to one’s mouth. They may be made in team colors or can be made in a very discreet, clear material. |

Niteguards
The next group of devices are used to protect teeth from clenching and grinding forces (known as bruxism). These are typically called niteguards because the most common time for the population to clench and grind their teeth is at night while sleeping. These types of devices are custom made, fit over either the upper or lower teeth, and work by simply separating the teeth with a balanced even surface of acrylic. These are most recommended to protect teeth of patients who are known to clench or grind or those who have had restorative dentistry (porcelain veneers or crowns) to protect their teeth at night. They are not typically designed to alleviate headaches or jaw muscle pain associated with clenching and grinding, but act to prevent further damage to the teeth or restorations by covering them during this activity. |

Occlusal Orthotics (Bite splints)
Occlusal orthotics (also called splints, bitesplints, or biteguards) fit over the teeth and allow the jaw to settle in its most natural position where the muscles supporting the jaw are relaxed and in harmony. The bite relationship of teeth on this appliance is very smooth and even. It is a conservative way to help alleviate jaw pain related to the TMJ syndrome and has the added benefit of protecting the teeth from the damaging forces of clenching and grinding.
