Occlusal Orthotics (Bitesplints)
Occlusal Orthotic Device
Occlusal orthotics (also called splints, bitesplints, or biteguards) can be thought of much like the orthotics one would put in their shoes. Orthotics for ones shoes are used to improve the way their foot strikes the ground when walking or running. In essence, they reposition the foot to a more natural position and correct variables such as turning in or turning out of the feet that can cause problems with the ankles, knees, and hips in the long term. Occlusal orthotics or bitesplints are used in much the same way. These appliances fit over the teeth and allow the jaw to settle in its most natural position where the muscles supporting the jaw are relaxed and in harmony and the bite relationship on this device is very smooth and even. It is a conservative way to help alleviate jaw pain related to the TMJ syndrome and has the added benefit of protecting the teeth from the damaging forces of clenching and grinding. With regular use, these appliance may often improve chronic headaches, jaw pain, and muscle pain in the jaw, neck and upper back. This device can also help you and Dr. Beerman learn valuable information about your bite prior to restorative dental procedures. When dentistry is done in this manner, your new restorations will not only be beautiful, but designed to be long-lasting and in harmony with your bite.
